My inspiration
Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Unity is when all the parts of a design relate to one idea. A harmonious design would be an example. You can use items that have similar characteristic.
Variety is when different styles and materials are combined. But remember don’t go overboard because it can become overwhelming.
Last is Electric style. This is when you mix furniture of different styles and possible from different periods. For example you can mix modern with classic. But remember to use items with similar proportions and similar finish.

Want some Rythm?
Today I want to tell you about rhythm. Rhythm suggests connected movement between different parts of a design. You can create with colors, lines, forms or textures. It is also known as continuity.
The rule of thumb means that it shouldn’t be over used. It can become monotonous.
Some ways to achieve rhythm within a room are by using repetition, radiation, gradation, opposition and/or transition. I’m going to explain each and one of them.
Repetition is the act of repeating. For example: AAAA, ABAB, ABCABC, and so on. Repeating a color around a room can give of a sense of rhythm.
Radiations are lines coming outwards from the central point of the room. For example: putting chairs around a table or placing small pictures arranged around a large one. Or even tying back curtains.
Gradation is when the color size or patterns gradual increase or decrease. This can be done by using candles or tables by putting them from small too big or big too small.
Oppositions are lines that create right angles. For example: having square corners of a doorway.
Transition is when lines change direction by flowing in a curve. An arched doorway can accomplish this.

Now let’s talk about balance. Balance occurs when the amount, size, or weight of objects on both sides of a center point is equal; or when unequal objects appear to be equal. There are two types of balance: Symmetrical and Asymmetrical.
Symmetrical balance is, also known as formal balance; the arrangement of forms on one side of an imaginary central line is the mirror image of forms on the opposite side. Some ways to create symmetrical balance is by arranging two upholstered chairs facing each other in front of a fireplace.
Asymmetrical balance is, also known as informal balance; when elements on either side of an imaginary central line are unmatched, but appear to be balanced.
Now let’s talk about emphasis. Emphasis is the center of interest or focal point that first catches the view’s attention. For example: single large item or multiple small items. Also the fireplace, art work, piece of furniture. These are some ways to create emphasis within your room!

Design principles
Hey guys! This week I’m going a bit more into interior design and I’m going to blog about some of the principles. There are six principles of design; this week I’ll talk about some of them and next I’ll finish of. Let’s now talk about proportion and scale.
Proportion refers to size relationships that can be found within an object or design. Designers choose proportions that are appealing for example: Rectangles vs. Squares. The rule of thumb is unequal proportions have more visual interest. There is the golden section and the golden rectangle.
The Golden Section is the division of a line between ½ and 1/3 of its total length. Designers find the “Golden Section”: to be more appealing.
The Golden Rectangle is the area created when you divide two identical lines.
To make sure that the proportion is good ask, “What is visually appealing?”
Scale refers to how the size of an object or a space relates to human beings to other objects or space in design. There is the human scale which is homes and furniture built for humans. Therefore, the human figure is important when evaluating scale. Who is going to use the room?

Some objects that could be use for the room could be colorful plates, Marino glass from Venice, painted tiles, something that falls naturally with the Tuscan style. Get some iron objects like candle holders, sconces. Also get earthy materials like stone, fabric, plaster and create something to the Italian style.

Like Tuscany?

Well here I am to get you to decorate your home into a Tuscan Style. To get inspired you should take a look at some of their art pieces like pottery and metal craft to get a feeling of what types of colors and accessories you should get for this style. You should get familiar with the Italian Renaissance. In Tuscany they use a lot of frescoes in their walls and ceilings. Mosaic tiles, wrought iron gates and portals, distinctive bridges and architecture from Tuscany all help you get that look you want for your home. These are some things you should keep in mind while creating this specific style. You should really try to get out the Italian soul within your room. Get that Italian and Tuscany feeling in there to make it seem as if you were there all the time.

Tips for a Modern Look!
Colors: Walls should be tones of black, white, brown, gray, beige, and chrome. Bright colors are used as accent and accessories. Primary colors can add the splash of red, yellow or blue that makes that modern look have live within the room inself.
Walls: Walls are simple, without moldings or embellishment; painted white or neutral tones. Using glass as walls is an important touch in Modern Style. Contemporary art, such as Abstract Expressionism and Pop art add life and organic interest to the clean angularity of modern design
Floors: Natural elements: Wood, stone, brick, and cork compliment the open, airiness of modern interiors. Abstract patterned rugs, such as kilim rugs, help soften the linearity and add character to the modern interior.
Lighting: Track lighting, in combination with recessed ceiling cans or halogen ceiling spots, are utilized to direct light onto specific areas of the interior. For example, spotlighting a painting or centering an open plan room by emphasizing an object with a focused light beam. Smaller lamps will add interest. Items like globe lamps, or tubular lamps, for example. Going simple is the key for a modern look.
Windows: Plain white curtains or Venetian blinds allow light to enter the interior without detracting from the open, uncluttered spaces. Or for a daringly modern look, no window coverings at all!

Modern
A Modern Style is very futuristic and 20th century. There are a lot of lines going on in these types of rooms. They don’t have straight lines they are mostly curvy and weird looking. Modern Style is inspired by Cubism, The Abstract, mostly in Paintings, and Pop Art.
Window frames should be simple. Huge picture windows, even walls of glass, are emblematic of this style. The floor plan should be as open as possible, and the space divided with modular furniture, low cabinets or bookcases or perhaps a partial wall made of glass bricks.

More inside a Japanese style house

Ever been to Japan?

Japanese style uses a lot of traditional ceramic made pots and things that are natural. For example wood, stone, rice straw. Also they use Buddhism and Zen related stuff. This is another way of getting that peaceful feeling you’re looking for to have inside your home. Rocks and gravel gardens make it more natural and earth related. Get plants around the house and also those sense smells. A wooden chair is something that can be made from earth so that is a good way to get your seating. Japanese style is very earth related and it also uses some eco friendly materials inside the house.

Classical tips...

• Focus on symmetry. Make each side of the room's focal point balance visually.
• Consider vertical, tone-on-tone stripes on the walls or the draperies.
• Create geometric patterns within stone or marble tile flooring.
• Get a large center piece, for example a natural rug surrounded by a classically inspired pattern - like a Greek key design.
• When you want to use whites you should get bright white or really light tan or caramel type of color. You should use light brown or creams near a white. But not light white make it pop out.

Classical

Classical designs are very old fashion. They are simple and very casual. Using the right colors to make a classical look it can take the cue from the empire periods of history where color choices were often inspired by nature. Consider various yellows, blues, greens, browns as well as softer, muted hues like terracottas, grays and pinks. Adding some ebony (black) accenting within a well-planned design scheme can enhance the classical feel.
You should get some common classical images for the room which include; Roman and Greek inspired columns, busts and urns. Obelisks and other Egyptian inspired design elements might also be used. A classical image can also be showed in a room through decorative accessories or as a carefully stenciled pattern on the walls, for example. There are also wallpaper borders available with strong classical design elements.
Fabrics in classical rooms tend to be delicate, elegant but also reserved. Some of the fabrics you could use for a room like this could be cotton, some less reserved options like silk or taffeta. Now for flooring you should go for a natural look, maybe a wood, stone or marble would be the best choice for a classical style.

A relaxing garden...
This week I’m changing it up a little bit. I’m going to blog about gardens. But I’ll talk about a garden that will make you feel relax and make you feel at home every time your there. Your garden can become a stress free environment.
First you need to have it planned out on paper and how the space is going to be use as. After that, you need to pick what plants you want surrounding the area. Maybe the sitting area may have different plants from somewhere else in the garden. Look at magazines and pictures in the internet to get some ideas of what things you would want in your garden and go from there. Very important is picking the soil for you plants and the type of garden you want. If you want a relaxing garden get Asian plants and make sure to have shade somewhere. In that shade make sure to have relaxing colors like browns and creams. Not bright colors. Also get water fountains and little decorations around the shade area.
Now for where there will be no shade get plants that are light colors and make you feel relax. This can depend on the type of person you are. You have a variety of choices to pick from. Also try having an open space that can look relaxing and you can have a picnic or a nap without anything bothering you. But at the same time make sure that if you are expecting kids to be around, that the space is big enough for them to run around and have a great time.

Ancient Egyptian Décor

This week I decided to blog about Egyptian design. This design is very bold and colorful. It has a lot of different designs and interesting pieces of arts. There is a variety of accessories in this design. To pull this look off you need to have some type of statues or paintings of Bastet cats. Cats were very important in their culture. They were considered sacred. Cats were like goddess for them. For the furniture you should go with a wooden chair and gold or cream color. Tables around the house should be weird shapes and curvy. There color should be brown with some gold and some red. A lot of art around the room should be a touch to completely the room. Mirrors around the house would make this look the room bigger and more interesting. Egyptian figurines are the biggest accessories to put around the house. It’s a nice touch. The walls should be Brown, red, cream and with gold accessories. Large furniture is something that is common in this style. It’s really out there and it’s ok to go all out. Don’t be afraid of color and to put weird accessories or furniture in the room, as long as the colors go with it. Make the room look tall and wide. This you can do it with mirrors, light colors in the ceiling and in walls.

Relax, good luck...
Ok this week I’m doing an Asian design. It was requested and I’m excited to do it! I’ve been doing some research on it and I love this style. I’m so excited to show you guys some tips on how to get this design in your own home. Asian design is a showcase of Eastern societies. One of the things that really make it feel like an Asian design is having a bamboo wall. They are modern and exotic for the Asian style. Asian fabrics can be used as curtains or wall hangings. This creates an Asian culture feel in the room.
Using dramatic colors in the rooms is one of the main this in an Asian look. They use the color red a lot because it represents and brings them good luck. Also they furniture is normally black and shiny. You should use wood as well. Using a lot of plants also makes it Asian. They use greens to provide texture and artistic expressions. Also you should try searching for furniture that has multiply purposes. Using a rug or a mat is also something you should get. For the windows go simple. In some cases there might be some colorful patterns going on but in most cases they are just plain and simple. Get a shoji screen, it provides a window cover as a room divider. One last touch for your Asian style would be a water fountain. They bring are peaceful and relaxing feeling. They make the room feel as if you were in a spa. Beach style!

Hey guys this week I’m going to blog about how to get a beach style look to your room. Let’s start off with the wall colors. You would want to get a blue for the water, a yellow to feel the sunshine and maybe like a tan/cream type of color for the shells and sand. This will set the mood for a beach like feeling. Now for the accessories! You should put up some frames with beach pictures, also some sea shells and ocean prints. If you get beach chairs and maybe a surf board it could help you get the look you want! For the lighting you should get clear lamps that are maybe a cream color, blue or light yellow. If not some that have sea shells or sand feel to them. You can also get rugs and pillows. For the rugs you would want something blue or cream to match the room and get the water or sand feeling. With the pillows maybe you could get yellow to get the sunshine feeling to it. For curtains get plain colors, if your walls are blue get the curtains cream and if your walls are cream get them blue or some other colors you would like but still give the beach feeling to the room. For the little hoops that hold the curtains they could be sea shells or a beach ball something related to the theme you want in your room. Make sure you have a lot of plants maybe some fake fruits just to have more accessories around. I hope you enjoy this and again have fun!

Starting of by...

For my first blog about interior design I would like to discuss about the different types of designs out there. The different styles designers have. There is a vairity of styles and I would like to sahre some with you. There is from chic to country, clasic to moddern and so much more! You don’t have to chose a single design for your room. There are many people out there that combine designs with other designs. The good thing about interior desing is that you can express your self. My the art you make decorating your new room. You can hire people to help you out organize you ideas are make the room of your dreams come true and alive in your own home. Decorating a new is not supose to be a job. You should be relax and enjoy the processes of the whole experience. The hardest part of this experience should really be what design your picking and what wall colors. The rest should just create on its own. Just realex and enjoy the ride.
